ABSTRACT

The outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic has devastated economic activities around the world. The tourism industry is facing severe challenges, such as reduced tourist flow and the lack of tourist consumption at desti-nations. Recreational farms are one of the business types of agricultural tourism in Taiwan and have the char-acteristics of small and medium-sized agriculture businesses. The operator is facing an uncertain environment in the epidemic market, and the operator's dynamic capability is considered to be effective in coping with the current environment. In this study, 20 selected recreational farms were interviewed to explore how operators use dynamic capabilities to make responses. The results show that recreational farms have the three elements of dynamic capabilities: sense, seize, and transform, to change farm marketing channels and develop new products or services to respond to the new market. Recreational farm operators adopted resource optimization, computerization, and cost control strategies to respond to the market. Management implications: A successful implementation of recreational farm offers requires-the reallocation of resources, -the planning of new products and services, and-the improvement of service processes to create new business and to address additional target groups. The COVID-19 pandemic forces a systematic positioning or repositioning of the business.

ABSTRACT

The largest and most significant disruption to the world's supply chain networks recently was brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply chain networks are facing unprecedented pressure to reassess their resilience although risks and disasters occur more frequently. Recent years have seen significant research on supply chain management and its importance to firm performance. Resilient supply chain management has been analyzed and explained using a variety of managerial theories. Thus, we can lay the groundwork for future supply chain resilience research by identifying trends in previous studies. Although a sizable amount of literature on resilient supply networks, only a small number of studies have gone in-depth. This article analyses supply chain management research. Based on a literature study, the amount of research on SCM theory and practice has dramatically expanded during the previous ten years. The current analysis identified the major themes, significant literature, and significant authors in supply chain resilience studies. Additional research in other sectors connected to supply chain resilience is anticipated to benefit from these findings. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Facility managers are increasingly tasked with being the champions of change in their organizations, which may include activities such as space management revisions, construction delivery practices, maintenance programs, technology implementations, and others. While much of the previous organization change management research has focused on how facility managers enable the adoption of planned change events (i.e., new technology), this study identifies the successful change strategies used in responding to unforeseen circumstances or events. The researchers evaluated these unplanned changes through the lens of COVID-19, given its nearly universal impact on facility management as a profession. The research team collected survey data from nearly 900 organizations in more than 60 countries, and conducted detailed follow-up interviews with 28 organizations. Twenty-two parameters were grouped into three categories: organizational characteristics, organizational change management practices, and change adoption measures. The research team used three random forest models and three logistic regression models to further examine the relationship between the data and the change adoption measures. The results indicate that three organizational change practices were particularly important to overall adoption success and achievement: appointment of a change agent, support of leaders, and the timeframe for implementing the change. The analysis also suggests that the type of unplanned change initiative has an impact on its long-term adoption throughout the organization. Organizations should consider using a formal change management approach in order to successfully implement unplanned change initiatives. This paper highlights the importance of an effective change, the active involvement and support of senior leaders, and the timeline of implementing the change - even if it is unforeseen. © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

ABSTRACT

PurposeDespite the availability of several published reviews on the adoption of blockchain (BC) in supply chain (SC), at present, the literature lacks a comprehensive review incorporating the antecedents and consequences of BC adoption. Moreover, the complex adoption of BC in SC, explained with the mediating and moderating relationships, is not fully consolidated. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) on BC technology adoption (BCTA) in SC by integrating its antecedents and consequences.Design/methodology/approachKeyword searches were performed in multiple databases resulting 382 articles for evaluation and verification. After careful screening with respect to the purpose of the study and systematic processing of the retrieved articles, a total of 211 peer-reviewed articles were included in this study for review.FindingsVarious technological, organisational, individual, social, environmental, operational and economic factors were found as the antecedents of BCTA in SC. In addition, numerous applications of BC Technology (BCT) were identified, including asset management, identity management, transaction management, data management and operations management. Finally, the consequences of BCTA were categorised as operational, risk management, economic and sustainability outcomes.Practical implicationsThis study can assist relevant decision-makers in managing the factors influencing BCTA and the potential uses of the technology to enhance SC performance.Originality/value By integrating the antecedents, applications and consequences of BCTA in SC, including the mediators and moderators, an integrated framework was developed that can potentially assist researchers to develop theoretical models. Further, the results of this SLR provide future directions for studying BCTA in supply chain management (SCM).

ABSTRACT

Today, employee engagement has become a critical issue for every organization. Earlier, while organizations considered employees as a strategic tool, they are now believed to be strategic partners in a business. Employee engagement is connected with organizational outputs such as productivity, retention rate, creativity, customer satisfaction, and sustainability. This study focuses on the concept of employee engagement drivers that affect employee engagement at workplace, and the challenges faced by organizations and employees before and after the Covid-19 pandemic. An extensive literature review was done on such drivers, to find out whether there is some shift in the engagement drivers before and after the emergence of the pandemic and whether the shift is a slight or a major one. Fifty-one research publications on employee engagement, published in various journals between 1970 and 2022, were examined, and databases such as Web of Science, EBSCO, and ProQuest were used.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis conceptual paper aims to contribute to the knowledge management (KM) literature by seeking to determine whether wisdom management (WM) will replace KM in future.Design/methodology/approachThis exploratory paper follows the interpretivist research philosophy and the deductive approach. The data collection is based on selected literatures from three disciplines (KM, philosophy and psychology). The findings were qualitatively analysed.FindingsThe findings are threefold: (1) the discussion of wisdom has been either neglected or superficially discussed in the KM literature;(2) despite the fact that wisdom is widely discussed and researched in philosophy and psychology disciplines, there is no commonly agreed upon definition of wisdom, and a dichotomy exists between the implicit and explicit theories of wisdom;(3) wisdom research in philosophy and psychology disciplines provides valuable input to KM by identifying the dimensions, components and characteristics of wisdom and wise individuals.Research limitations/implicationsImportant sources may have been unintentionally overlooked in this paper. This paper identifies the need for empirical research and discussion about WM as the next potential phase of KM. It offers several implications for researchers, managers and management educators as this paper shows that WM is emerging as a new discipline.Originality/valueThis paper makes a theoretical contribution to the fifth phase of KM by drawing attention to wisdom and WM as the next potential phase of KM.

ABSTRACT

Purpose The purpose of this research work is to examine the financial effect of supply chain disruptions (SCDs) caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and how the magnitude of such effects depends on event time and space that may moderate the signaling environment for shareholder behaviors during the pandemic. Design/methodology/approach This study analyses a sample of 206 SCD events attributed to COVID-19 made by 145 publicly traded firms headquartered in 21 countries for a period between 2020 and 2021. Change in shareholder value is estimated by employing a multi-country event study, followed by estimating the differential effect of SCDs due to the pandemic by event time and space. Findings On average, SCDs due to pandemic decrease shareholder value by -2.16%, which is similar to that of pre-pandemic SCDs (88 events for 2018-2019). This negative market reaction remains unchanged regardless of whether stringency measures of the firm's country become more severe. Supply-side disruptions like shutdowns result in a more negative stock market reaction than demand-side disruptions like price hikes. To shareholder value, firm's upstream or downstream position does not matter, but supply chain complexity serves as a positive signal. Originality/value This study provides the first empirical evidence on the financial impact of SCDs induced by COVID-19. Combining with signaling theory and event system theory, this study provides a new boundary condition that explains the impact mechanism of SCDs caused by the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Methods to collect data in construction engineering and management (CEM) research are evolving, informed by recent technological advancements. One such method is research charrettes that allow effective interactions and knowledge sharing between expert industry practitioners and academic researchers, all colocated in a single venue, enabling rich data collection and live communication. A pivot point in technological evolution occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing a global shift to remote work. Hence, planned in-person research charrettes had to shift to remote sessions, relying on virtual conferencing platforms and online data collection mechanisms. Technology-enabled charrettes have allowed the authors to collect significantly richer data sets and ensure a more diverse representation of participants, while saving tremendous amounts of time. With the continuing emergence of technological applications, the world might not go back to functioning fully in person. The authors believe remote research charrettes (RRCs) will still be used in a post-COVID-19 world because of their superior performance. This paper builds on a previous publication that described traditional research charrettes as a method to enhance CEM research a decade ago;it offers a significantly updated and improved RRC method based on the knowledge gained from transitioning a dozen in-person charrettes into RRCs. It also presents performance comparisons between RRCs and traditional charrettes by quantifying metrics indicating how RRCs are more time-efficient and cost-saving, harness more participants from more diverse locations, and enable the collection of richer data sets and four times more industry comments and expert feedback. This paper also provides guidance on the integration of technology with traditional research charrettes, hence contributing to the CEM body of knowledge. © 2022 This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

ABSTRACT

Despite the significant fluctuations in global trend due to the rising trade friction and the COVID19 pandemic, the container terminals are continuously working in three technology areas including automation, electrification and digitalization. This study reviewed recent technology trends as well as relevant research topics related to the container terminals, and investigated how the trends and topics would facilitate the terminals to achieve their strategic objectives. We also studied the trends in the container terminal industry before and after the pandemic outbreak. Recent progress shows that generally the long-term plans remain unchanged while there are some changes in timeline and priorities. The findings suggest that despite the common interest in long-term plans, gaps are still identified between academia and industry interests. Future directions are discussed for these technology areas, particularly in the context of the post-pandemic world, where the limited resources should be invested to the most urgent areas.

ABSTRACT

Purpose Innovation is one of the most important foundations on which to create and sustain competitive advantages in companies, but at the individual level, employee innovative behavior has recently been jeopardized by the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. changes in workplaces, employee interaction, motivation). This study analyzes wellness programs and actions through which organizations have tried to adapt to the new situation caused by COVID-19 and their effect on employee innovation behavior. Design/methodology/approach Structural equation modeling by means of the partial least squares technique was used to test the study's hypotheses after collecting survey data from Spanish companies, providing evidence that wellness programs and measures to deal with COVID-19 through perceived organizational support and affective commitment encourage employee innovation behavior. Findings The results suggest that efforts developed by firms focused on employee well-being to overcome difficulties caused by the pandemic strengthen innovative behaviors by means of intrinsic motivation based essentially on personal commitment. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed by the paper's authors. Originality/value This paper corroborates and extends previous research regarding wellness programs, perceived organization support and affective commitment. It provides a comprehensive model of relationships that predicts employee innovative behavior. It analyzes the influence of enterprise wellness programs based on protective COVID-19 measures.
